ROTOM has been able to bridge some of the gaps in Uganda’s health sector by providing excellent geriatric care at the ROTOM Health Centers, and other health care interventions through the ROTOM Senior Friendship Program. A key achievement of ROTOM’s care for seniors is the increase in their life expectancy, which has increased from 72 years in 2015 to 79 years in 2023. This has allowed ROTOM seniors to live longer and age with dignity. This great achievement has inevitably come with an increase in the cost of health care for ROTOM seniors.
Now, many seniors supported by ROTOM have become weaker and frailer as they age. The rapidity with which this situation has happened has greatly been attributed with their environments and especially, the care they receive. Ideally, seniors are meant to depend on their extended families to provide the care which they need. However, this is difficult because these families are already stretched and affected by poverty, past wars, HIV/AIDS, the burden of caring for orphans, among other challenges. Unfortunately, in the absence of appropriate care and rehabilitation, some seniors have lost their physical abilities and autonomy. ROTOM support to the seniors and their households has been helpful, but limited to a certain extent because of its limited financial position.
Your donation to the ROTOM Health Fund helps us meet many health care costs for our seniors.
