In the past, many ROTOM supported seniors depended on subsistence peasant farming for their survival. However, old age (average age of ROTOM supported seniors is currently 79 years), has rendered most of them sickly, weak and frail. 56% have visual impairments while 36% have physical disabilities. They are not able to participate in this manual and tedious farming. For those who are able to farm, the yields are too low! This has led to low food production which limits their access to food to only what they are able to produce. As a result, they mostly depend on ROTOM, a friend/family member with a job in the city or neighbors for food. Every month ROTOM provides food packages to over 200 seniors’ households to ensure that they are able to have at least 2 meals per day.
